The following session, known as a ‘Product Module’ relates to a specific product to be used for fire protection. The presentation looks generically at the types of protection and the method of installation for the protection systems. This product module looks at ‘Fire Rated Partition and Ceiling Systems’ combined.
The fire rated partition and ceiling module provides an introduction to some of the more common lightweight partition / ceiling systems available and their installation requirements. The module also looks at how the correct fixing of the systems is important to prevent fire spread from one side of the separating element to the other.
The first part of the module examines some of the requirements of the Building Regulations related to partitions and ceilings, and also the large- and small-scale fire test methods used to provide evidence of performance for such elements of construction. Comparison is also made of some gypsum wallboard systems tested to the existing large-scale British Standard fire test and the new European fire test.
The second part of the module looks at lightweight constructed walls specifically partitions comprising various wallboard facings attached commonly to a steel or timber framing system. The shaftwall partitions, wall lining systems, re-locatable, folding/sliding and glass partitions are also briefly covered. The general installation requirements are discussed with specific detail concerning the surrounding construction, perimeter conditions, types of wallboard materials, various framing materials and fixing methods, door and window openings, deflection heads and service penetrations.
The second part of the module also looks at lightweight constructed ceilings specifically solid and lay-in grid suspended ceilings, direct fix ceilings comprising various wallboard facings attached to a steel or timber framing system. The general installation requirements are discussed, specifically the surrounding construction, perimeter conditions, boarding materials, framing materials, board and frame fixing and ceiling penetrations and openings.
The final part briefly discusses quality records and health & safety when dealing with partition and ceiling systems.
