Course details

The following session, known as a ‘Product Module’ relates to a specific product to be used for fire protection. The presentation looks generically at the types of protection and the method of installation for the protection system. This product module looks at ‘Cavity Barrier Systems’.

The cavity barrier module provides an introduction to some of the more common cavity barrier systems available and their installation requirements. The module also looks at how the correct fixing of the system is important to prevent fire spread from one side of the separating element to the other.

The first part of the cavity barrier module provides an introduction to cavity barriers for the purpose of restricting flame and smoke movement within concealed spaces, which may allow the unseen movement of smoke and flames from one part of a building to another. This relates to the requirements of the building regulations.

The second part looks briefly at how the cavity barriers systems are fire tested.

The following part of the module looks at some of the more common types of cavity barrier materials available and examines specifically the supporting construction, the services and their support and some of the installation requirements for the systems themselves. Systems specifically examined include the mineral wool flexible barrier, the glass fibre cloth flexible barrier, a semi-rigid barrier and the rigid barrier systems. The advanced level presentation looks at these aspects in greater detail with many examples from specific site installations.

The final part briefly discusses quality records and health & safety when dealing with cavity barrier systems.
