The Fire Rated Steel Door Module

Aim: to enable delegates to familiarise themselves with the more popular products and systems used in fire rated steel doorset systems and be aware of the ‘do’s and don’ts’ for installing such products, providing an overall understanding of why it is important that they are installed to specification.

Delivery: The sessions will be delivered using mainly PowerPoint presentations and group discussion. Photographs and samples are used to emphasize certain aspects of the course.

Award: Each candidate will receive a certificate if a successful understanding has been gained.


Course details

The following session, known as a ‘Product Module’ relates to a specific product to be used for fire protection. The presentation looks generically at the types of protection and the method of installation for the protection system. This product module looks specifically at ‘Fire Rated Steel Doorsets’.

The steel doorset module provides an introduction to the fire rated steel doors used throughout modern buildings and their installation requirements. The module also looks at how the correct installation of the doorset is important to prevent fire spread through a building.

The first part of the fire rated steel doorset module provides an introduction as to why doorsets are required, the definition of a doorset and the requirements of the building regulations. This section is followed by details of how the fire rated steel doorsets are tested.

The next section examines the generic construction of steel doors, the supporting construction, the doorframe installation, hanging of doors and doorset configuration. The advanced level presentation looks at these aspects in greater detail.

The following sections section looks at the hardware that may be incorporated on the doorset, the intumescent and smoke seals and the vision panels that may be included and finally overpanels and sidepanels. The advanced level presentation looks at these aspects in greater detail.

The final part briefly deals with health & safety, storage and handling and maintenance of steel doorsets.
